History

Since 1905, Bat 9 has been a hotel and catering industry location. The family Risac had the exploitation “Hotel-café Du Transvaal”. The hotel had 12 rooms and was mostly used by merchants and tourists travelling to Belgium and France. Also military police and custom officers stayed overnight. Later, the hotel was taken over by the family Besseling, who also renovated the hotel and café. The local people from Eijsden came here more and more, and every summer, a terrace was placed in the meadow. In the weekends, the terrace served as a dance floor, an orchestra played dancing music.

In 1969, the café-hotel was sold to restaurateur Ed Schooneveld from Maastricht, who named it Portofino. The terrace outside was added to the restaurant and the hotel rooms were rebuilt into 4 apartments.

After that, the restaurant has had different owners and names like: Le Papillon, de Schollevaar and again Du Transvaal.

Since 1 June 2011 until now, it is called Eetcafé Aon’t Bat.

The terrace, located right next to the ferry-service for hikers and bicycles, is the crown jewel of Eetcafé Aon’t Bat. It is separated into two areas. On top at the quayside and below in the calm natural area of Eijsden. Both terraces have a wonderful view on the river Meuse and its beautiful natural surroundings. Because of the fact that no motorised traffic is allowed in this part of Eijsden, it is one of the most beautiful and tranquil places of the South of Limburg.

On our terrace you can enjoy our food and beverages in all tranquillity.

Should it get a little colder, our terrace is provided with wind screens and terrace heaters so you can still enjoy your lunch or dinner outside.

Next to our terrace, there is plenty of space for parking your bike and there is also a possibility for recharging your E-bike.

Of course we have free WIFI on our terrace!

Youri and Danny: from dishwasher to chef!

Meet our 2 chefs Youri and Danny in this interview!

The interview with the two chefs of Aon’t Bat is a Chapeau Content Creators production commissioned by Maastricht Culinair.

They met each other over 10 years ago in the kitchen of the late Le Papillon, then they each went their own way to gain experience, and met again at Vaalsbroek in Vaals, before they came back together to Eijsden. Chapeau talked to Danny Miessen and Youri Wijering, the two chefs of Aon’t Bat in Eijsden.
